STS-75: Tethered satellite breaks free

Spaceflight Now Digital Video
Posted: April 5, 2008

The STS-75 mission in early 1996 flew the Tethered Satellite System back into orbit for a second attempt at unreeling a ball-shaped spacecraft on the end of a 12-mile-long shoelace-sized tether. The tether had jammed during deployment on STS-46 in 1992. During this reflight, the astronauts had succeeded in getting the craft nearly fully extended when the tether suddenly broke. The crew describes the mission in this post-flight film.
